CONCEPTUAL URBAN AND ARCHITECTURAL DESIGN, Independence Square in Podgorica
The conceptual design includes the complete reconstruction of "Independence" Square in the center of Podgorica, integrating adjacent streets and areas, as well as the construction of underground infrastructure.
CONCEPT
First and foremost, we paid attention to the existing structures, facilities, and forms, which is linked to our strong belief in the history and traditions of a particular place, as well as preserving its "fabric - the DNA of the city." This determined the square configuration with surrounding buildings. We found inspiration for it in the idea of creating a modern version of the Peristyle.
We envisioned a lively space and were motivated by the motto "Fill the Square" – it should serve as an "urban social media" and act as a counterpoint to social online media.
Double meaning
Fill / Feel – the message can also be "Feel the Square" because we mean it in the same way. People need to fill the place and experience it simultaneously.
FILL the Square, FEEL the Square
"The Square as a Stage" – to watch and to be watched
We envision a stage where the residents will perform, and events of urban life will unfold. By outlining the central area of the square with the structure above the surrounding space, we aim to create an "urban stage" for festivals and universal art events, fitting into the city's silhouette and attracting its "audience" of residents. This interactive public space, flexible and multifunctional, changes throughout the day and from season to season.
Additionally, in the project on level -1, we included a bowling hall (with billiards and other entertainment) and a live music club. The "Upper Stage" (the Square) and the "Lower Stage" will complement each other within the context of the overall concept.
A 21st Century Garden
This is not a green park space where people go to escape the city, but rather a place that gives them the opportunity to experience the city from a different perspective. It is a place where they go to "fill the square and feel the city."
The balance of natural materials, geometric and soft forms, greenery and water, lights and reflections – creates a vibrant and aesthetic atmosphere that will give people a sense of harmony and make them recognize the space as the desired "pause," walk, or entertainment spot.
Sharing space, sharing amenities
We foresee multipurpose use of the space with pedestrian routes, recreation and meeting areas, event hosting, etc., through:
-
Functional zoning: relaxation, meetings, entertainment, art, and culture; drinks and food
-
Encouraging the creativity of local young artists and designers to complete the design with installations initiated by local sponsors or the municipality
-
Supporting local entrepreneurs – pavilions with new "marketing" opportunities.
